Don’t get me wrong I’m one of the minority of football fans in the UK who does actively make a point of watching internationals.
Yes I know, ridiculous, unbelievable even for a blue when the majority of the Sky era has meant any Englishman who blew his nose within 3 feet of the Old Trafford pitch gained a cap and since SGE friendlies have meant how many players can we cap in one match while not upsetting their managers by actually making any of them break sweat (or learning anything useful, like how certain new young in form players could fit into the tactics of the team!)
The League is just building up nicely as we approach the BEOTS (Business End Of The Season) and then… Boom! Off all the players pop to all corners of the globe and suddenly we’re all in limbo. Forums go quiet, chief sports writers jet off with the squads and we’re all of a sudden left in the land of the bored Journo.
So far this week we’ve been linked with Pep (but were not asking him till the end of the season – thanks for that!), Diego Simeone (you know the one – just signed a contract extension) and Carlo Ancelotti (because well he’s just lost the Classico so a certainty for the sack) and that’s just the managers.
FFP isn’t going to apply this summer as Pogba, Wilshere, Sterling, Bale, Reus, Ronaldo and Messi arrive in a £1 billion spending spree that will make Platini have a seizure but everything will be ok as we will still break even apparently!
God help us when the window really does open. One City fan, with more time on his hands than me, has so far logged 23 players linked with us since the weekend across the various UK & European papers.
So I’m starting a charity… ‘Give a Journo a home during the International Break’. If you spot one please take them in (or down the pub) so they can sit in a quiet corner until the real excitement returns in just over a weeks time.
You never know Roy might play Harry Kane ahead of Danny ‘Barn Door’ Welbeck (yes I know – don’t give me the ‘but he scores for England’ line, so did Crouch, he’s still s**t. (Welbeck not Crouch who still sits above him in this season’s scoring charts with a fraction of the game time.) He’s not even in the top ten English scorers this season …or in fact any season he’s played so far for that matter so if ever there was proof of the rag bias he’s case numero uno!) and we’ll get to see what a future winning England line up could look like… No – stop laughing at the back!!!
