Or maybe this article should be titled ‘How did our lives come to be dominated by 140 characters?’
Maybe I’m getting old (in fact I may have mentioned this a few times before!) but I’m often frustrated by the speed with which everything needs to be consumed or interacted with now.
I know that sounds funny coming from me. After all I’ve always been a technologist, have a long history of early adoption and have been involved in a fair number of MCFC related internet firsts (1st Virtual Reality live match broadcast anyone?? – 20 years ahead of my time …and counting!). Still one thing I have never enjoyed is Twitter. I had rejoiced when predictive text, merged texts and text bundles had looked like signing the death knell of Txt Spk and then along came Twitter to make saying something interesting like the Krypton Factor. Oh – I signed up at the start but wrote it off as pointless. How do you say what you want to say without making yourself look like a 16 year old brain dead moron?
I like my conversations well thought out and worth the effort. It’s why I like my site. The average age of visitor is a little older than most and the forum replies invariably have taken the people more than 10 seconds of swiping on a mobile keyboard to produce.
It’s also why I like reading blogs. I am not a blogger myself (despite this post), I’ve tried it but I don’t have the discipline to post regularly and consistently on a subject over a long period of time… too easily distracted by the next big thing! However I have a lot of time for well thought out commentary on my favourite subject – MCFC. Sure some of the Blogs I disagree with or don’t like the authors style, but I still read them.
And that’s where the sad part comes in. One thing that the site revamp has shown me is that the world has moved on again. There are 64 blog / fan site links (excluding the Supporters clubs) in my Website Listings (Of my original list a further 29 were culled as the sites are no longer in existence). Of those only 23 are in active use and of those only 14 are what I would term live (English language) blogs…
By the time you get down to it I can honestly say I only view 8 regularly now (If you must know Bitter & Blue, Blue Chews Daze, Dembe MCFC, Down the Kippax Steps, Standing Alone, This is our City, Typical City & A View from a Blue) all very good in their own ways and I found myself thinking ‘Where have all the bloggers gone?’.
…and the answer is a simple one. For the first time I have put links to Twitter feeds on the Links page. Once, players had websites like the rest of us, now they don’t need to. There are 64 current or former players on the List (and those are just the ones I am aware of) – I haven’t yet added the ladies (but I will!) Almost all are active. Even though I am not a huge fan I do tweet occasionally and I follow 268 people (at least today I do – mainly sports people, journos and City fans) and I try to keep that number down as the stream can already be a blur on occasions. And there is the rub, Twitter brings us updates from the horses mouth at the speed of light. I couldn’t possibly list all of the City fan Twitter feeds and to list just a few (or even a few hundred for that matter) would be favouritism. So we rush to the future and the blogs and forums slowly dry up.
We don’t have time to pause for thought and that’s a shame because pausing to think and resisting the knee jerk reactions is where we are at our best. I also dread to think how much vitriol is aimed at our players on a daily basis & in many cases from our own ‘fans’. Or how that makes them feel. So go on, pause for breath, make yourself a coffee, put your feet up, fire up the tablet or laptop and support your City blogger by giving them a read. After all they are a dying breed and what would the world be like without a little thought behind it…
