I have a little bit of a mental battle going on.
And to be honest I think a fair number of City fans of a certain age will be feeling somewhat the same.
The problem is we remember old City…
Not very good City.
Financially strapped City.
Revolving door City.
So when I hear the constant media clammer around Pellegrini being up for the chop there’s a part of me that goes ‘Woah there let’s have a think about this boys!’
After all, we are talking about a manager who achieved a league and cup double last season and well no other City manager has ever achieved that. We also complain that nobody is given enough time and that Mancini shouldn’t have gone after what he had achieved. Yes, I’ve not been a fan of his tactics at times. I certainly view his European campaigns as deeply flawed – he simply didn’t learn from the previous season (neither did Mancini to be fair) but are things really so bad?
And there is the rub. The owners don’t remember or care about old City, typical City and nor should they. Neither does Wookie Jnr. At 10 I’ve been taking him for 4 seasons and all he remembers is success (He was really disappointed with City not doing well in the FA Youth Cup!).
They’re building the City of the future…
The Global Brand City
The millions of followers worldwide City
The successful City
And that makes some of us older types a little uncomfortable.
Some of us would settle for 4th now. It would be disappointing (and would make a difficult start to next season and recruitment) but it wouldn’t matter that much. The owners however I would guess would view anything less than 3rd as abject failure. In fact it’s easy to see why the press are clammering for his blood if he doesn’t get to second.
The Charming Man therefore has an extreme up hill battle now to stay in place. If he does have some discord in the dressing room it certainly wouldn’t have been helped by the recent Klopp and Benitez announcements / stories, as those who aren’t a fan can look to two potentially high quality managers that can come in.
It’s a much over used statement that a manager has “x number of games to save a season” but in this case he probably does. The season trophy wise is long lost but a little salvation can be gained by retaking big red and getting in the top three. Even then it may not be enough for our silver haired Chilean.
I would suggest only 5 from 5 would stand a chance and that starts on Saturday and those 5 would need to show fighting spirit.
Nope… I can’t see that either.
So long Engineer – thanks for your efforts but the cult of the now is moving on!
Thanks for the first season it really was great but ‘iz important’ City become more dynamic and fresh to get to the top of the world tree and well, whether we like it or not – that is something you are not!
