Wookie’s Man City Links was born in Feb 1994 in the backwaters of the then fledgling Sheffield Hallam Uni website.
Away from home with just the weekly sports clippings post (that’s real mail not email) from my folks, I’d put up a web page with links to any of the pages on the infant web which might contain information about my beloved blues.
While I shared this knowledge with a couple of close friends it was only after discovering the MCIVTA email and web page in Jan ’95 that I finally had another dedicated City site to talk about and went public.
Since then it has gone through many iterations, been the back up to several larger forums, been the online home for the now defunct McVittee FC (Manchester City Internet Football team) and Bert Trautmann’s Helmet fanzine (sadly missed), and eventually a Manchester City fan forum in it’s own right.
The world and the Internet is a massively changed place since I first gave birth to this site, and indeed so is the team I support and while occasionally I wonder if I’m getting “too old for this s**t!” leaving it behind would be like ripping off an arm. I’ve made too many life long friends scattered across the globe to turn away.
And so here it remains once described by an online user as the “broadsheet readers Manchester City forum” – I get what he meant. The clientele of the site are slightly older than most and have grown with it. The discussions are fewer and can be long, wordy and in depth but that’s what makes this site unique amongst the fast moving high technology world outside. And that’s how I like it. If you like to get the news and rumours first then the brilliant faster than light Bluemoon forum is the place for you. If you are the sit with your feet up, read the paper from back to front with a brew sort of person then this place is the one for you. The MCFC ‘Sunday Supplement’ to Bluemoon’s ‘Soccer Am’!! Yin and Yang – everybody needs it.
Whatever your Internet preferences, socio-political background, gender, race or creed; whatever team you support, you will always be welcome here. All I ask is that you treat others with respect as you would the members of your own family as that is what we are, one big family. We argue, we moan but at the end of the day we shake virtual hands and move on to the next event, the next topic, the next match etc.
After well over half a million posts in it’s various guises and many requests to make the site more mobile friendly I’ve finally got round to revamping the place from the ground up and it’s also given me the opportunity to go back to where it all started and restore the world renown Man City Links to it’s former glory. I’ve also started to update the online store so take a moment to have a look.
Enjoy your stay – hope it’s a long one, we’re not going anywhere soon.
